A gap isn't a verdict — it's a planning problem. There are usually several ways to close one, and the right mix depends on your situation.

How this calculator works

  • All figures are monthly amounts in today's dollars. The calculator compares the totals directly and does not adjust either side for future inflation.
  • The multi-year figure simply multiplies the annual gap by the number of retirement years you entered. Real-world costs typically rise over time, so treat it as a floor.
  • The capital figure applies your chosen withdrawal rate to the annual gap. A 4% starting withdrawal rate is a common planning reference point, not a guarantee of sustainable income.
  • Taxes on withdrawals, Social Security, and pension income are not modeled, and neither is market volatility or sequence-of-returns risk.
  • If you're not sure of your expense numbers, the Household Budget Worksheet is a good place to build them first.

Important: This calculator is provided for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute financial, investment, tax, or legal advice, nor a recommendation to buy or sell any security or insurance product. All results are hypothetical estimates based solely on the figures you enter and do not reflect the performance of any specific investment. Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, and actual results will vary. Please consult a qualified financial, tax, or legal professional before making decisions. Close the gap before you reach it

The earlier a shortfall shows up on paper, the more options you have to solve it.
